Empowerment through education
The Slum to Scholar Foundation is a Canadian non-profit based out of Vancouver. Slum to Scholar focuses primarily on identifying primary students from some of Uganda’s poorest neighbourhoods who have demonstrated extraordinary academic abilities. Like most children in Uganda, these brilliant students who are at the very top of their classes cannot afford to attend junior high and high school in Uganda and would be forced to dropout after finishing primary school.
Slum to Scholar provides each of these primary students identified to have extraordinary academic abilities with a full Slum to Scholar Scholarship to cover the costs of junior high and high school. After graduating, a team of experienced scholarship experts at Slum to Scholar helps these students apply for university scholarships worth over $200,000 at some of the world’s top universities. This allows some of Ugandan’s brightest minds to avoid dropping out after primary school and to become community changemakers and international scholars.
Our accomplishments
Slum to Scholar has operated since 2018. During this time, Slum to Scholar has:
- Fundraised over $15,000, with 6 outstanding students currently attending junior high and high school on full Slum to Scholar Scholarships.
- Created a meal program initiative which provided 30 students from the Mbale region of Uganda with school meal programs. The students enrolled in the meal program were previously unable to afford school meal programs and lived in impoverished slums or remote mountain villages.
- Assisted high school students in Uganda to apply for university scholarships. This provided the Slum to Scholar team with valuable experience in helping Ugandan students apply for international scholarships and allowed Slum to Scholar to compile a database of identified scholarships specifically for Ugandan students. As such, Slum to Scholar is now better prepared to assist recipients of the Slum to Scholar Scholarship to apply for university scholarships once they start graduating high school.
Our Goals
Slum to Scholar aims to achieve the following goals by 2030:
- 30 students enrolled in secondary school on full Slum to Scholar Scholarships
- 10 former Slum to Scholar students going on to receive full-ride scholarships to study at top international universities.
- $500,000 in university scholarships awarded to former Slum to Scholar students after graduating.
