Slum to Scholar: Explained in 2 minutes
Let’s make a difference, together
We are Slum to Scholar, a Canadian non-profit organization focused on increasing access to education in Uganda. We are not a traditional education charity or NGO, our focus isn’t childrenโs helplessness or their need for a sponsor. Instead, we recognize incredible kids for their intelligence and ability to overcome adversity. We empower these brilliant children to pursue higher education and create change in their communities.

Why Slum to Scholar?

100% of every donation goes to the children
At Slum to Scholar, all administration fees are covered by a small group of donors who have agreed to cover all administration fees. This means 100% of your donation will go directly to the children.

Multiplying the effect of your donation
Every time your donations help a student graduate high school, a team of scholarship experts at Slum to Scholar provide that student access to a computer and matches them with potential university scholarships

Spark a cycle of giving
After graduating university, students are asked to either create positive change in their local Ugandan community or to assist with a scholarship for another primary student to join the Slum to Scholar program.

Create future leaders
Slum to Scholar connects selected students to community leaders and discusses long term goals and ways for these students to be the change they want to see in the world.

How Slum to Scholar Works
The Slum to Scholar program identifies Ugandan children graduating grade 7 who have demonstrated extraordinary academic abilities but cannot afford the fee increases to continue school. Slum to Scholar provides each of these children with the following:
- 6 years of high school fees.
- 6 years of meal program fees.
- 6 years of required school supplies (such as stationary, uniform etc).
After graduating high school, Slum to Scholar identifies potential university scholarships for each child. Slum to Scholar then provides each child with access to a computer and pays the application fee for two of the identified university scholarships.
Cost Breakdown:
Typical cost to support one scholar is โผ$60 per month (a yearly total of $737), broken down as follows:
- $40 per month ($480 yearly total): Boarding school fees (includes place to stay, meals and school fees)
- $13 per month ($157 yearly total): 1 year of school supplies (includes all required stationery, school clothing, bedding, uniforms, etc.)
- 8$ per month ($100 yearly total): 1 year of extraordinary/student-dependent costs (medication, national exam fees, emergencies, scholarship applications, etc.)
